Is our destiny fixed and whatever is going to happen is fixed according to previous karma ? Why should we bother about doing anything ?
Answer by HH Radhanatha Swami
Very good question, thank you, but not everything is fixed? What you have done in the past has fixed the present destiny, depending on how do you react to the destiny you have created by your previous act will decide the destiny for the future. Just an example...
You have done pious work like giving charity to others. By that good work you get a million dollars this life. Now you were destined to get million dollars due to your previous good activities. Now what are you going to do with million dollars, you can invest million dollars in marketing drugs, cocaine and get billions in return. Then what is your future destiny, you can be smashed in a car accident die or you may get robbed by dacoits and take all your wealth or you may suffer due to various bodily disorders YES?
Or you can use that million and use it to feed poor and take care of poor people health, and then you get very pious results. Or you can use that million and really use it to illuminate people heart spiritually to understand concept of god. Then you get tremendous amounts of spiritual benefit. So what we have done in the past is done; we are getting the reaction. But how we are going to act to those reactions will determine our destiny for the future. Does that answer your question?
Student: But what we are going to do with that million dollars, is also fixed?
No it is not fixed; this is a very serious and dangerous misconception. We always have free will; free will is never taken away from spirit soul in the human form of life. We may due to our previous activities; we may have strong inclination to use it for particular cause Depending on our previous conditioning. But still we have a free will. That is why it is important to associate with people who have pure aspiration, in their association it is easier to overcome the previous inclination and use it for a right cause.
For example a drug addicts, due to his conditioning his state of mind, he will be always thinking, yes I must have another sip of drugs. He will have a very strong tendency to smoke ganja, if he is living with other drug addicts then that perpetuates his consciousness. His desire to take drugs will naturally goes on increasing. But the person will have always free will to give it up, if a person has some sincerity to give up then he associates with right people who have not taken drugs yes? That will give us strength. Similarly if we have a strong material tendencies, if we associate with people who have strong spiritual aspiration then that will give us strength to enable us to use our higher self to conquer our lower self. Every conditioned soul has animalistic propensities, at the same time we have divine virtue. If we nourish our animalistic propensities, then the divine virtue becomes very weak and it becomes hard to make right choice. But if we nourish our divine virtues by proper association with devotees by proper conduct, then this higher self conquers the lower self. So we always have free will. It is very dangerous type of justification to make no progress to have this atheistic way of looking at reality. And thinking everything is fixed, I don't have any free will, whatever going to happen it will happen, I will flow with the current. All my desires, all my thoughts, all my aspirations, what everybody else are telling me just don't worry about it. Just I will flow as I go. If that is the case then Why Lord Krishna spoke BagavadGitha, why Prophet Mohmad gave us the holy Koran. Why Jesus had to come and sacrifice his life for welfare of people. Why does Mahavir come down to start Jain religion? Why there are so many incarnations, prophets andyogis who came to this world teach us how to live, how to make the right choice, if we had no choice. So for that reason why are you going to school, why are you studying when it is destined that you are going to fail. Why don’t you just flow with the destiny? You have a choice either to study or fail. Only fool will say it’s my destiny to fail. Tell this to your professor, when you get your score card tell this to your parents. It is a useless impractical philosophy.
